Situated in Calçada
de Santa Catarina, near the old Royal Road, in Cruz Quebrada, the
Chalé do Poço is an old cottage building presenting
colonial style characteristics combined with the Portuguese traditional
architecture, which gives the building an interesting and unique personality.
Time has mercilessly left its marks and after many years without
maintenance the house was ruined showing several pathologies,
mainly at the level of the wood structures, particularly those
of the covering and floors.
The initial building concept and the nobility of the interior finish,
mainly the stuccos, frescos (marbling) of facings and wood simulations
in the existing doors were a clear sign that the house had been
inhabited by a member of aristocracy.
At the beginning the recuperation project implied the use of modern
techniques and methods, at structure level, which meant metallic
and concrete binding beams. On the other hand we had to think
about disturbing as little as possible the ground floor tenant.
He is 80 years old and it would be difficult for him to adapt
to the situation. As the property has a surrounding area of around
1000m2 an outbuilding with a garage downstairs and an apartment
upstairs was planned. So during the works the tenant could move
there without changing his daily routine too much.
